Nothing Is A Given

I had a scenario with an organization with which I do leadership and coaching. This organization is closely tied to another federally funded organization. As you can image, there is concern within both organizations and a lot of unknowns and a lot of questions.

As luck would have it, the first coaching session we had for the day was teaching that part of the leader's responsibility is to calm the "waters" as best as we can. As we were talking, a gentleman said this: "I'm going to do what I do today just like I do every day because tomorrow is not a given.

When he said that, it shook me and took me back to when our son was shot and almost died. Nothing is a given. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. Take nothing for granted.

Regardless of where you find yourself today - nothing is promised. Tomorrow isn't promised. That doesn't mean we live "footloose and fancy-free" disregarding our responsibilities. It's just the simple reality that nothing is a given and to move forward at all times.
