Connecting Before Asking

The reality is that as we lead our teams, families, and organizations, we must connect to the heart before we ask for the hand.

In other words, we have to serve those around us before we expect them to serve us.

Emotional equity must be established. We have to make deposits into the emotional “bank accounts” of the people around us. And one of the best ways to do that is through servant leadership.

Serve your people. Connect with them. Get to know them. Invest in their lives and their families. Show up for them. Make deposits into their “tank” — not because you expect something in return, but simply because you value them.

That’s true servant leadership.

Leadership isn’t just about getting people to follow you. It’s about earning their trust by demonstrating that you’re willing to walk alongside them, invest in them, and serve them.

And when you consistently show up for others, you’ll often discover something powerful: when you need them most, they’ll show up for you.

Before you ask for their hand, make sure you’ve first connected with their heart.
