I have been a worrier my entire life. Unfortunately, it is just the way that the Good Lord created me. I got tested for my first ulcer when I was in grade school - even at the ripe old age of 11, I was always worrying. There is no good reason behind my worrying and its something that I struggle to control most days. It may be worrying over something big that involves the kids or it could be something completely immaterial that wakes me up at 3:00 am and keeps me fro...

Does anyone remember Y2K?? I sure do, as my dad was running 3 different banks at the time, and just in my conversations with him while I was in vet school, I recall the somewhat fear he had from the coming end of the world from the media advertised worldwide computer crisis. My dad worked in a corporate bank at the time, and I am certain, given my knowledge of how corporates work, they had blown the coming Y2K into mass oblivion.

Dave Ramsey was discussing t...

We always hear the saying, “Burning a bridge.”, usually associated with someone leaving a working relationship with an employer. But as we know, can happen in just about any relationship involving two human beings, maybe it’s a friend, a family member, teammate, coach, or even a parent.

I think about over my life and all the relationships created over the years, from a kid to high school, on to college, then vet school, and on to the real world of life in various tow...

Each day there are many details that occur with or without our attention.  It may be how observant we are as we drive to work on the events around us on our drive, like my kids waving at the cross-walk attendant each day by Jefferson school.  Other details may be the next meeting of the day and getting there on time.  Or maybe it is your next workout and your level of energy isn’t what it was yesterday so you cut it short by skipping a few sets.  Or it could be you...

We often have many things we have done for years in business, at home, or at school.  Some of those things we have done are tradition, and some are just because.  On the family farm, at home, or at work, we have processes and procedures we do daily to accomplish our daily goals and tasks to keep things moving forward.  I always say that we must humbly ask ourselves “why” we are doing any certain process or procedure, and if we can’t answer the “why”, with an answer...

Have you ever worked in a workplace where your boss or direct report was inconsistent in their daily actions?  Was it an environment of you never knew which version of Boss X was going to show up at work?  Was it going to be the Happy Boss X Version or was it going to be the Jekyll Boss X version?  Many of us have been in those unpredictable environments and most all human beings don’t perform optimally in those environments because it creates an eggshell environmen...

Conflict is around us every day.  I routinely talk about conflict to repeatedly remind people around me that we can all grow and better handle conflict that occurs each day. Conflict is everywhere. And at its core, conflict occurs because there is a negative energy that is created by the gap between what we want and what we experience in any given situation. We may see this with our spouse in how we handle parenting. One parent may want their child to finish the foo...

The only thing worse than training up and pouring your heart and soul into a team member and having them leave, is not training and pouring your heart and soul into them and having them stay.  At AMC, we bring in new team members through a much more rigorous hiring process than ever, and we like to go after rock stars.  Over the years we have brought on over 5 young go-getter veterinarians.  And each time we start the hiring process, I can my buddy Dr. Dan Thomson a...

Can you all believe Facebook has been around since 2004!?  I looked back on my own profile to see when exactly I started using Facebook, and it was August of 2008.  And I’ll never forget how I started, it was after I saw one of my best friends, a university professor in California, using it.  Of which is the main reason Facebook started.  It was started by a group of college friends at Harvard as a way to interact socially and network amongst college students at Har...

I recently had a conversation with a lovely lady that is part of the AMC family and learned more about her and some of the previous events not only in the beginning of her employment with us, but in her previous work years. She was thanking us for a gift we had given her (remember the $100 bill Leadership post?), and was talking on how some of the younger folks in our organization just don't fully understand how lucky they are to be at AMC, because she had been in p...
