It is the sad truth that most people don’t understand health or disease.
If everybody knew with the same certainty as they know their own name that both come from within us, the quality of their lives would instantly improve dramatically.  Why?  Because, instead of worrying (which is really the number one killer in the world) about all the things “out there” that might “get” them, they would look at what they were doing in their lives to promote either health or disease and they’d work to tip the balance in the favor of health.  They would know that they and only they have absolute control over their quality of life and health.

That is my goal for you.  I want you to want to understand the truth about health and disease.  The drug companies would rather that you didn’t know the truth.  BIG MONEY is not made off those who know the truth!

Please read the articles available on this web-site and get an appreciation for who you really are and what amazing feats of healing you are capable of.  HEALTH, HAPPINESS, AND SUCCESS ARE ALL INSIDE OF YOU RIGHT NOW!

WHAT IS WELLNESS?

Modern medicine excels in providing crisis care.  If you are in a bad car accident, or you are having a heart attack, they are the people to see.  BUT, modern medicine has failed miserably at providing for wellness.  Medical “wellness programs” are really marketing slogans for the early detection and treatment of health crises.  They do not do anything to help you improve health or performance.  So how is wellness different from medical care?

Experiencing wellness means experiencing a rebirth of vitality in your life.  It means moving toward optimum physical well-being and performance.  It means moving toward optimum mental well-being, and it means ever improving social interactions and relationships.  Knowing wellness is knowing that the power that created you is still within you.

The kind of care and information we provide is specific to helping you to improve the communication between your body, mind and spirit for a balanced healthy life.  We invite you to thoroughly study our web-site, explore the links, and practice the self-help ideas we offer.  Remember this:  There is no law that says you can’t just get better and better and better until you die!

If you enjoy the information offered, and you benefit from it, you are welcome to make a donation to help our efforts to promote the advancement of truth in wellness care.

TAKING THE MYSTERY OUT OF YOUR FIRST VISIT

You could be in a lot of pain right now so I’m going to say this up front.  In our office we provide care on the first visit.  If you come to us seeking relief from pain, we are going to begin that process as soon as possible.  Neither of us know yet how successful our efforts will be on this first visit, but we are going to give you 100% of our attention and effort to begin your healing process.

And this brings up a very important point.  Healing is a process.  It is not an event.  Lightning does not strike and the world is forever different.  What we do here is work to bring your body, mind and spirit into balance so that the power that made your body can heal your body.  We gently and carefully remove the interference to normal information and energy flow over your nerves and other energy pathways, so that your perfect spirit can be fully expressed through your mind and body.

On this first visit, sometimes even we are amazed with the amount of relief a person experiences.  On the other hand, sometimes there are almost no noticeable changes in symptoms for several visits.  But most often, small to moderate improvement is made with each visit as the interference to your natural healthy functioning is removed and the healing process unfolds.

Just prior to beginning your care, we will conduct an examination to determine the extent of imbalance present in your body.  This is not for the purpose of giving your condition a name.  We don’t do that here. The results of your examination will act as a check later in your care to see how well we are progressing toward balance.  Pain or other symptoms may fade and return, and fade and return while you are healing, but the balance indicators will keep us on track with your actual progress.

You may be wondering about how much this will cost, and will your insurance cover it?  Our financial policies work like this:

First, your major medical insurance policy may or may not cover chiropractic services at our office.  We are not a member of any managed care system, HMO, or PPO.  Also, coverage often changes annually due to contract changes or changes in state or federal laws.  You need to call your customer service representative (usually an 800 number on your card) and ask if you have chiropractic benefits?  What percentage of each service do they cover?  Is there a deductible?  How much of your deductible has been met for the year?  Is there a visit limit or spending cap?  Bring this information with you on your first visit, as well as your insurance card.  You will be required to pay up to your deductible if it has not been met, and after that, your co-pay each visit.  We will bill the insurance company directly for the balance.

We will bill PIP or MED PAY policies if you were involved in an auto accident and have a claim number for that accident.  As a rule, they pay 100% of your care up to a contract limit.

We can no longer accept Medicare or Medicaid policies.

If you don’t have insurance coverage that will apply to your care with us, call us at (360) 436-1663 for current fees and cash discount information.  We accept cash, or checks.

BODY-MIND HEALING

There is more and more being written, and talked about on television, about the body-mind connection and what understanding that connection can mean for you and your family’s health.   Most of what you read in popular magazines is not understood by those writing about it.  One writer worth reading on the subject is Deepak Chopra, MD, and his book Quantum Healing is written for the lay-person to understand.  He also expands the concept of body-mind healing to that already understood by chiropractors since 1895.  Specifically, that it is body-mind-spirit healing.

D.D. Palmer, the man who discovered the healing principles that came to be known as chiropractic, knew the importance of the body-mind-spirit connection.  In his 1910 landmark work, “The Science, Art and Philosophy of Chiropractic,” page 552, he writes, “The chiropractor looks upon the body as more than a machine; a union of consciousness and unconsciousness; Innate’s ability to transfer impulses to all parts of the body - the coordination of sensation and volition; a personified immaterial spirit and body linked together by the soul - a life directed by intelligence uniting the immaterial with the material.”

I’ll excuse you if you had to read that over several times like I did.  The old style of writing can almost make a foreign language out of words you know.  For clearer language and a road map to help you better understand the body-mind-spirit connection there are two good books written by Dr. M. Ted Morter, Jr.; “Dynamic Health, Using Your Own Thoughts and Memory to Create a Healthy Body,” and, “The Soul Purpose, Choosing the Path to Health, Happiness and Success.”

Dr. Morter is the chiropractor who has been developing the Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique for the last 3 decades.  He is also author of “An Apple a Day?  Is It Enough Today?” a layman’s guide to better nutrition.  We have some books available in office, or ordering information can be found at morter.com .

The key to making practical use of body-mind-spirit healing is in your understanding that within each of us is an intelligence as old as life itself.  This intelligence guided our physical development from one cell, the fertilized egg in our mother’s womb, to the trillions of cells that make up our adult body today.  And it didn’t stop there.  This perfect intelligence is on the job 24/7 adapting our internal environment, based on the perfect information it gets from every cell in the body, to our external environment, based on the five senses AND from information stored in memory.

What seems to us like “errors” in adaptation which result in illness, are really our body’s perfect response to information.  But the information is not what is coming in through the five senses.  Instead it is information stored in memory.  See, TIMING PROBLEMS.

When you know in your heart that your body, guided by the perfect intelligence within you, can never make a mistake.  It makes health problems not something mysterious anymore.  It means health problems always have a cause, and that the cause is within us, and it is correctable.  It is correctable because the solution is within us as well!

WHAT CONDITIONS RESPOND TO B.E.S.T. CARE?

The ones people really want to be rid of!

As you will read in the other articles available on this web-site, much of the interference to our normal good health is caused by negative thinking or negative responses to stress in the past.  The BEST practitioner specializes in removing the influence that past negativity has had on your health, and in teaching you how to respond differently in the future, as well as how you can make better dietary choices to improve your health.

What we can’t do is change your motivation or core beliefs.

One chiropractor told me how a lady who had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia was making good progress with B.E.S.T. adjustments.  Then a friend of hers who had been diagnosed by the same medical doctor introduced her to a fibromyalgia support group.  The patient started reading about the progression of the disease in others, and developing a network of friends all around this condition of hers.  Her focus became what symptoms she was likely to develop as her condition progressed.  Within a couple of weeks she was back to square one.  She had bought back into the medical disease-management paradigm, instead of the improve-the-whole-person-and-disease-has-no-place paradigm she had been learning at the chiropractor’s.

Our core beliefs really do affect every aspect of our lives.  Our current level of health, happiness, and success in life is a perfect representation of what our deeply held beliefs are right now.  If we don’t like where we are right now we need to change our beliefs.  How do we change beliefs that we are not even aware that we have?  See AFFIRMATIONS

AFFIRMATIONS!

Our subconscious mind attracts into our life experiences that resonate with the dominant feelings stored in our memory.  If our past was full of experiences we regard as negative, the tendency will be to attract more negatives into our life.  Going through the B.E.S.T. “updating” procedure, and practicing the FORGIVENESS process and learning what was good for us in those experiences neutralizes the negativity.  But nature abhors a vacuum!  What can we do to fill our subconscious with positive feelings so that health, love, peace, abundance and all the good things will be attracted into our lives?  Develop the habit of repeating a few positive affirmations when you go to bed at night and first thing in the morning before you get out of bed when your subconscious is more accessible to your conscious mind. Here are some examples:

·        I AM GOOD!

·        I AM WORTHY!

·        I AM NON-JUDGEMENTAL!

·        I AM FORGIVING!

·        I AM LOVING!

·        I LOVE MY LIFE!

·        I AM THANKFUL FOR MY PERFECT HEALTH!

·        I AM THANKFUL FOR MY PERFECT HAPPINESS!

·        I AM THANKFUL FOR MY PERFECT SUCCESS!

·        I AM THANKFUL FOR GOD’S PERFECT SPIRIT WITHIN ME!

·        I AM THANKFUL FOR THE TREMENDOUS ABUNDANCE IN MY LIFE!

·        DAY BY DAY, IN EVERY WAY, I AM GETTING BETTER AND BETTER!

It is easy to custom tailor your affirmations.  Just use, “I am,” or “I am thankful,” or some other means of keeping the affirmation in the present tense.  A short, direct statement is best.  You can use this method to attract anything you truly desire and is beneficial to you.  Remember, we don’t attract with our conscious mind.  Through habit, we program our subconscious and it does the work.  So relax and have fun with it!  For example, a person who is going to quit smoking could say, “I enjoy breathing only pure, clean air!”  Or let’s say a woman is a size 18 and wants to be a size 12, “I am thankful for my lovely size 12 body!”  A person who has recently been promoted to a managerial position, or wants to be, could say, “I am thankful for my excellent ability to get the best from my people!”

A word of caution, this is all about YOU.  You can’t affirm anything for anyone else, and your affirmations won’t change anyone else.  However, your affirmations WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!  So look for the good and BE THANKFUL!

FORGIVENESS:  YOUR KEY TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE

In his book, Dynamic Health, Dr. M. Ted Morter, Jr. devotes an entire chapter to learning how to use the power of forgiveness to dramatically improve your health and vitality.  He also has available through morter.com an audio tape set, “Forgive the Past and Save Your Life!”, which I highly recommend.  What I offer here is gleaned from those sources, as well as weekly conference calls and monthly tapes that are available only to Morter Health System member doctors.

Five Steps To Forgiveness, plus one:

1.     Forgive the other person for any harm they may have done to you.

2.     Forgive yourself for any harm you may have done to yourself or someone else.

3.     Give the other person permission to forgive you for any harm you may have caused them.

4.     Accept the other person as they are.

5.     Wish them well.

6.     Find the good in what you had previously thought of as a bad situation.

1.     Don’t just say, “I forgive you.”  You have to really forgive them in your heart.  I can hear you thinking already, “I can’t go up to them and forgive them!”  It’s OK, you don’t have to.  Someone you need to forgive may already be dead, or thousands of miles away.  You only have to get right within yourself.  You are not agreeing with or approving of what they did to you.  You are understanding that everything that anyone does is motivated by something in their life.  Forever give up the chance to get even with that person.  The past is past and no one can change it.  Let it go!

2.     Forgive yourself and mean it!  We are often harder on ourselves than we would ever be on another person.  So what if you could have done things differently.  You didn’t, and it’s OK.  Maybe at the time you didn’t know any better.  Once again, you can’t change the past.  Let it go, and change your future.

3.     Give the other person permission to forgive you for any harm you may have caused them.  In your mind!  There are always two sides to every story.  Often, in some small way, we contribute to the creation of these stressful events in our lives, even if it is as little as being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Also, everyone has their own perspective on life.  Look at it this way, people generally feel that they are behaving logically based on their beliefs.  If two people’s beliefs are very different from each other, the other’s actions will appear to be illogical or irrational.

4.     Accept the other person as they are.  You can’t change them or their beliefs.  If you think that they must change for you to be happy, then you can never be happy.  Realize that it is difficult enough to control your own thought processes.  The best way you can help people is to love them more and expect less.  The more you let others be who they are, the more you will be free to be who you are.

5.     Wish them well.  Once again, in your mind.  It costs you nothing, and it lets all those last threads of needing to get even fall away to free you from your bondage to that memory.

6.     And plus one.  THIS IS ACTUALLY THE MOST IMPORTANT PART!  Find the good in that situation, and be thankful!  We can’t change what happened, and we can’t forget.  But we can learn to remember in a different and positive way!  Every experience benefits us in some way.  It is our job to find out how.  If we take a memory of what we regard as a bad event in our life and find the positive benefit or lesson that we can learn from it, then we can turn negative, health sapping energy into positive, life sustaining energy.

To get the most out of this process use it first on the BIG events in your past.  If you just can’t seem to get yourself right about a past event, you may need the help of a B.E.S.T practitioner, like Dr. Nels, to overcome “subconscious emotional override”.  Then apply the process to the “little” disappointments of daily life.  Do this as you lie down to go to sleep, and you will awaken with a clean slate to write your day on.

PRAYER

Most people, when they find themselves in dire straits, turn to God for help by praying.  And most people, if they pray really hard, end up getting exactly what they don’t want.  Why is that?  Is it because prayer doesn’t work?  Is it because God isn’t listening?  Or is it possible that most people don’t understand prayer?

In the bible we are told how to pray.  To paraphrase:  Ask for what you want in the manner of giving thanks for that which you have already received.

Wow!  Is that ever different than, “Please, dear God, cure my fibromyalgia!” or, “Please God, don’t let me get cancer like my mother did!”

Let’s look at the proper way to pray.  First, “Ask for what you want..”  In the above two examples, do you want fibromyalgia or cancer?  No!  What you want is a healthy body!  The focus of the prayer should be on what you want as the end result.  If you focus on what you don’t want, you will get that instead!

Second, “…in the manner of giving thanks for that which you have already received.”  So, instead of, “Please God…”  It should be, “Thank you Lord for blessing me with…” or “I am thankful for my…”

Let’s put it all together now as if we were already enjoying that which we want.  “Thank you Lord for blessing me with perfect health!” or, “I am thankful for my perfect health and abundant energy!”

The tradition of praying at bedtime is a good one.  The barriers between our conscious and subconscious minds are fading as we fall asleep.  So praying as you are relaxing into your slumber would be an excellent habit to cultivate.  Also, making positive statements, or praying, just upon awakening is an uplifting way to start your day as well

You see, God has already given us the ability to heal ourselves of any condition known to man.  Unwittingly, we create interference with that natural ability by focusing on the negatives instead of being thankful for the positives in our life.  Especially if we can see the good for us, the positive benefit for us, in what at first seems to be a negative experience.  Then we will avoid setting up the interference to our natural healing ability.  Our continued good health will then be assured.

As an example:  Many years ago I went through five years of what seemed like hell with the IRS, but (to make a long story short) one day I woke up and found myself living in the town that I love, Darrington.  I realized that what I had thought was the worst experience of my life was really the BEST experience of my life.  I would never have come to Darrington if not for the seemingly negative experience with the IRS!  Now, when I think about those days, I see the good - the benefit for me - in the experience, and I am thankful instead of bitter.

HOUSE-CALLS

A Story

Why don’t doctors make house calls like they used to?  In one word, technology.

As the practice of medicine has become more and more reliant on blood tests, x-rays, CAT scans, Ultrasound, PET scans, etc., etc. doctors have lost that ability to just go and deal with it.

When I first began my own practice in 1980, I needed an x-ray of every patient so that I could analyze their spine.  When I began seeing horses professionally in 1985, using x-ray was not even an option.  After years of  providing equine care without x-ray I began to question if I needed x-ray for my human care.  I had learned to read the body language of horses with great success.  Could I apply those principles to people?  Yes!

In 1994 I gave up my attachment to an x-ray machine.  The one concern that made the decision a difficult one was, “What if somebody had cancer of the bone?”  Wouldn’t I risk injuring that patient?

A test came when a good friend of mine came in with low back pain.  His body language would not indicate that a low back adjustment was appropriate on his first visit.  Two neck adjustments were indicated.  On his next visit only one bone in his neck needed adjustment, but his pain was increasing daily.  On his third visit the same vertebra in his neck needed some minor adjustment, but no low back adjustment was indicated, and yet his pain was worse than ever.

“Couldn’t you just pop it for me?”  He asked.

Remember, this was a very good friend of mine asking for help!  I had to tell him that my experience had taught me not to fight what the body is telling me.  I suggested that his steadily increasing pain while his body language indicated that the interference to normal nerve function was getting less and less might be an indication of an underlying process that was not immediately responsive to chiropractic.  I further suggested that he might want to have that investigated medically since he was in a crisis, and crisis care is their specialty while mine is rebuilding health.

Unfortunately, it was discovered that his lower spine was riddled with cancer, and he only survived for a few months more.  I am thankful that I had not succumbed to temptation and manipulated his spine against the indicators I was observing.  If I had, he would have been paralyzed immediately.  I am also thankful that I use non-manipulation methods for spinal adjustment.  If I don’t “crunch” it, I can’t break it can I?

House calls was the subject.  I make house calls regularly now because I have no technological needs which prevent me from doing so.  If you are interested in my coming to where you are to provide care, see HOUSE-CALL POLICIES.

HOUSE OR FARM CALL POLICIES

As a business person I need to run my business profitably.  That means maximizing the value of my time.  As a chiropractor who loves his work and loves helping a diverse population of people and animals, I spend much of my time on the road making farm and house calls.  One reason you don’t see many chiro’s or M.D.s making house calls is that it is a very inefficient, meaning unprofitable, use of time.  I have developed policies that help me to maximize my mobile practice efficiency.

First, I have days when I cover certain geographic areas.  I don’t handle “emergency” calls that would take me out of my area that day because I would have to charge hundreds of dollars per call for that kind of inefficiency.  Besides, emergencies should be handled by the emergency experts.  I help you to build your health from the inside out so that you don’t develop emergency conditions.

Second, the flow of my route is very important to enhanced efficiency.  I plan a route and then I give you a general appointment time like morning (8am-noon), and afternoon(noon-5) so that I don’t end up criss-crossing the county all day long.  Often, I do email my approximate schedule a day or two before, but the vagaries of travel and last minute schedule changes account for its approximate nature, especially as the day wears on.

Third, I also have group discounts.  If I see only one patient and then hop in the car, that is very inefficient.  If I go to a location and see a group of patients, my efficiency is enhanced and I reward the group with a price break per individual.  If you and several friends get together it helps you all to save money and be healthier.  Sometimes I am able to coordinate one or two loners into a nearby group, but don’t count on it.

          One patient                     $75

          Two patients, each           $50

          Three or more, each         $40

Cash or check paid at time of service.  ($30 charge on returned checks.)

Fees subject to change without notice. Contact us for current information.
